How can I ever retrieve all the thoughts I had about the fifth book in Prousts seven-volume series actually the eight in my ten-volume edition. It begins to seem like a sadly futile recherche du temps perdu. And yet, the urge to write something, I often wonder for whom I write my reviews, of course for myself most definitely, it bothers me a lot to leave a book unreviewed now that I have adopted It will soon be a year since I read this book so writing a review of it now seems almost impossible. And yet, the urge to write something, I often wonder for whom I write my reviews, of course for myself most definitely, it bothers me a lot to leave a book unreviewed now that I have adopted this practice of recording impressions left on my mind by what I have read, that by posting them in a public place, I intend the words to be read by others as in the diaries people wrote hoping they might be published one day and which surely were being censored as they wrote, so yes, I censor as I write and Proust did too, searching for just the right coded formula with which to convey his preoccupations most clearly and most opaquely at the very same time, a neat trick, and confusing sometimes, especially when I try to do it.

If you ever travel to France and visit Nancy, remember that its dazzling centre has been created by a Polish king. His name was Stanislas Leszczynski and he was king not once but twice. His time in power as Duke of Lorraine was more stable and successful. Prowadzono w Polsce obce wojny. First let me describe what was going on in Poland at that time. Wars involving foreign powers were fought on Polish soil. Leszczynski, a powerful aristocrat outmaneuvered him by entering into a treaty with Carolus XII, king of Sweden.
The Swedish monarch helped him to obtain the Polish throne in Unexpectedly Louis XV, king of France. She had been chosen from dozens of European princesses. The union with French royals altered utterly the circumstances of the Leszczynski family. His struggles to regain power, supported by Louis XV led to a successful conclusion.
This same year he was named Duke of Lorraine and settled in Nancy. What did he do for the city of Nancy? First of all Leszczynski created a beautiful plaza, surrounded by magnificent buildings. Today the plaza has been placed on World Heritage List. The new duke of Lorraine offered the people of Nancy, formerly a fortress city, merry festivals and celebrations where they enjoyed dancing and delicious foods. Stanislaw Leszczynski had a statue of Louise XV erected in the center of the plaza.
The bronze figure of the king was destroyed in the revolution. Installing a new one was not possible. Leszczynski was a notable political writer as well. Share this:.
