GOING AFTER CACCIATO PDF

So in his divine simplicity he starts to hike the 8, miles to the City of Light. In the process, the pursuers - and the reader - discover some truths about themselves and the nature of human existence. They learn that horror is not confined to combat. They learn how the lack of ideological commitment among the American troops in this has made the suffering both easier and harder than the wars considered more"just". But this makes a genuinely serious novel sound serious minded, in an educational-television way; and far from being a high-minded, low-voltage debate on the rights and wrongs of Vietnam, "going After Cacciato" is fully dramatized account of men both in action and escaping from it. Cacciato himself is as faceless as the white whale, appearing occasionally as Christ figure "the light of the world" , as a Buddhist monk in Mandalay, as just another happily lost G.

Cacciato himself is as faceless as the white whale, appearing occasionally as Christ figure "the light of the world" , as a Buddhist monk in Mandalay, as just another happily lost G. His pursuers, though are also sharply characterized, from Pic. Paul-Berlin, the most reflecting and imaginative of them, to Stink Harris, who jumps ship just outside Piraeus to escape capture that the others easily elude.

All are haunted by their killing of a West Point lietenant whose by-the-book insistence on investigating hillside caves before blowing them up had resulted in the death of two of their comrades. Only Sarkin Aung Wan, a lissome Vietnamese lass who tags along on the epic journey- as a refugee she has her own dreams of Paris - seems fabricated for the movie version. As the characters are making their separate peace, their farewell to arms, Hemingway rhythms emerge: "The cart was piled high with lamps and rugs and furniture.

Three women sat there. The facts, the physical things. Perhaps all American writing about war must pay homage to Hemingway. There were always new places to dance.

Going After Cacciato Analysis

Chapter 1 Going After Cacciato cuts back and forth between several different time periods, all of which are seen from the perspective of a young, inexperienced soldier named Paul Berlin. As the novel begins, Berlin and his fellow soldiers are in the midst of a brutal war in Vietnam. The soldiers decide to chase after Cacciato before he gets too far away. Corson insists that they proceed. The soldiers track Cacciato to a hill, but are unable to arrest him before a smoke bomb goes off. The chapter ends before we can see what happens, and when the plot resumes, two days have passed: the soldiers are still chasing Cacciato through the jungle. Berlin also thinks about his conflicted relationship with his mother and father as he sits at the observation post.

Plot Introduction[ edit ] Typical of many stories that deal with themes of psychological trauma , Going After Cacciato contains distinct ambiguities concerning the nature and order of events that occur. The chronology is nonlinear for most of the book. Paul Berlin, the main character, is a frustrated soldier. During one night while on watch duty, Paul Berlin thinks about the past and events that lead him to daydream about going to Paris. Cacciato, who is always portrayed as self-sufficient and happy, is pursued by Berlin and his comrades in arms. In the chapter "Tunneling Toward Paris", the characters escape the endless tunnels by "falling out" just as they fell in; this allusion to Alice In Wonderland helps to reveal the story as surrealistic fiction. This surrealism also appears earlier in the novel, when Cacciato flies off a mountain.
