DEBORAH TANNEN FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES PDF

But, like everything in life, moderation must be applied for the tool of debate. Tannen is concerned that our culture has become so accustomed to this habit of arguing that we have framed everything into a debate, in which winning or losing is the main concern. She has observed that, while conflict and opposition are needed in a dialogue just as much as cooperation and agreement, the scale has been tipped, with conflict and opposition being overweighed. It also encourages people to look for irrelevant rhetorical weaknesses in the opposing argument, rather than listening to the important matters at hand. Tannen goes on to list the repercussions of the previous observations, concerned that this increasing trend of opposition is attributed to the breakdown of our society. Since community is a blend of connections and authorities, both of which are deteriorating from this adversarial attitude, alienation then forms, and the trend spirals communities into states of detachment and hostility.

Each city changes their wall in attempt to scare the other and they keep going back and forth. During the course of WWII, there were many strides to end inequality at home and overseas. While some were fighting to keep our home soil free from foreign threats, others were serving to gain rights and fix all the domestic threats to their freedom.

However, people do not like change and think it is impossible for us to change. Although, most of us realize there needs to be change, we do not actually put any of it into action. Throughout our lives, there are problems occurring continually in our world related to war and combat. During these times of hardship, we must remind ourselves to persevere and continue to defend the country.

The main message the author tries to educate to us, is shown all throughout the story. Police officers all over the world help the safety of others on the streets. Firefighters stop burning buildings and they even go inside the burning buildings to save the people trapped.

EMTs all over the world make an impact in saving lives. Many people in the world give up and do not care to put their own life at risk for someone else. Unlike heroes, they are leaders who are determined to change and make a difference Celebrating Our Veterans?

From to , soldiers have and continue to put their lives on the line for the great cause of upholding freedom. Rachels criticizes the claim of cultural relativism by providing us with a list of consequences: We could no longer say that the customs of other societies are morally inferior to our own, we could decide whether actions are right or wrong just by consulting the standards of our society, and the idea of moral progress is called into doubt.

In my family, we like to take family photos to show our growth and to get to see each other all together. While these family photos are always pleasant beforehand, they turn out to be a total disaster. Just a couple weeks ago my family had our pictures taken. The photos turned out extremely well, but if only the camera could see the turbulent ride that led to a disaster at our house.

Our nation seems to be served as an international police helping out a majority of other countries all around the world. With its passed leaders, we have worked out way up to being a superpower country. World War I has had some pretty good justifications where the U. S stressed enough that they will do anything to protect our freedom and also protect others from oppression if needed.

In some ways that World War I is justified, first.

Summary of Deborah Tannen’s the Argument Culture Essay

Now Tannen is back with another groundbreaking book, this time widening her lens to examine the way we communicate in public--in the media, in politics, in our courtrooms and classrooms--once again letting us see in a new way forces that have been powerfully shaping our lives. The argument culture urges us to regard the world--and the people in it--in an adversarial frame of mind. But just as spouses have to learn ways of settling differences withoutinflicting real damage on each other, so we, as a society, have to find constructive and creative ways of resolving disputes and differences. Public discussions require making an argument for a point of view, not having an argument--as in having a fight. Tannen shows how deeply entrenched this cultural tendency is, the forms it takes, and how it affects us every day--sometimes in useful ways, but often causing, rather than avoiding, damage. In the argument culture, the quality of information we receive is compromised, and our spirits are corroded by living in an atmosphere of unrelenting contention. The Argument Culture is a remarkable book that will change forever the way you perceive the world.
